Need another excuse to eat guac? Or perhaps your favorite salsa? We have you covered with these perfect plantain dippers.
You want to get plantains that are fairly green. If they are too yellow, they won’t get crispy and they’ll be less savory. However, if they have just a little yellow to them, they will be easier to squash. Choose your plantains wisely!
Just to be clear, these are in no way a traditional tostone. They are much crispier and thinner.
They are meant to be a plantain chip/tonstone hybrid. They are like a little cracker to spread guac on! We have included the recipe we used for a very simple guac, but it’s totally not a requirement.
If guac is not your favorite (or if finding perfectly ripe avocados is too difficult), these tostones pair well with any salsa too. I personally like pairing salsa verde with these.

Twice Baked Oil Free “Tostones”
Ingredients
Tostones
- 2 mostly-green plantains
- Kosher salt
Simple Guac (optional)
- 1 ripe avocado
- 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1 jalapeno seeds removed and diced
- 1 garlic clove crushed and minced
- 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Slice plantains into 3/4-inch rounds. On a large tray, lay out all the plantains. Season generously with salt.

Bake for 10 minutes.

Remove from the oven, and turn up the heat to 425 degrees F. While plantains are still warm, smash them.

Place the smashed plantains back onto the baking tray, season with salt again (to taste), and bake for 10 minutes. Flip, and bake for another 8-10 minutes until crispy.

Optional: To make the simple guac, mash together all ingredients in a medium-size bowl until desired guacamole consistency.
